Blowfish Sushi

Blowfish Sushi is to die for! And I quite literally mean that. You don’t want to be chomping down on a piece of this stuff before you have all the facts. Just remember, if your Sushi chef slips in its preparation, its game over.

The blowfish, or “fugu” as it is known in Japanese contains a nasty poison called tetrodotoxin. An amount the size of a pin head is enough to kill one person and the fish itself contains enough poision to kill 30 people!

So what happens if you eat ill-prepared blowfish Sushi? The poison will paralyze your muscles while you remain fully conscious. Death by suffocation occurs within a few hours. Scary stuff!

Some of the symptoms of eating poisonous blowfish Sushi include a numb tongue, lips and face; dizziness and vomiting.
Only a specially trained and licensed chef can prepare Sushi that uses blowfish. Training is stringent. An apprentice must train for three years before taking an official test.

Most folks think that eating any kind of Sushi is being adventurous. And although I’ve been known to shout that “Sushi is to die for!” I draw the line when it could actually kill me. This seems perfectly rational doesn’t it?

Does this mean that folks who eat fugu are nuts? No. Although many people find the fish tasteless, I’d argue that most connoisseurs are lured by the danger much like race car drivers are lured by the danger of high speed.
Amongst fugu connoisseurs, fugu sashimi is the most popular way to serve blowfish. The meat is sliced paper-thin and placed on a pretty plate.

Fugu can be also be eaten deep-fried. In Japanese this dish is called Fugu Kara-age. Another dish known as Fugu-chiri, consists of fugu simmered with vegetables.

Fugu sashami can range anywhere from $50 to $200. That’s a pretty hefty fee for something that taste bland and has the potential to kill ya!

Even if you’re still tempted to try fugu sashimi, it won’t be easy to track it down. Outside of Japan and South Korea, there are very few restaurants in the United States licenced to sell blowfish Sushi. And if you live in the European Union, you’re out of luck! Its banned!
